ions, not actual phonetic events [...]. In some cases this means that conspicuous phonetic breaks occur at major constituent boundaries, but this is neither the essence of the boundary nor the only factor governing the distribution of the intonational features”.6 In this work we will not specifically tackle the issue of whether our higher level prosodic breaks are intonational phrase breaks proper (Ip) or intermediate phrase breaks (ip), though some discussion will be offered in the individual language sections.7 Speaker PG sporadically produced the whole utterance in a single prosodic phrase, probably because he was speaking somewhat faster than speaker NM.8 When branching (or double-branching) subjects were followed by double-branching objects (e.g., La boliviana de Badalona mirava la melmelada meravellosa de la Maria) we observed two possible strategies to resolve the unbalanced phrase lengths. First, the speaker produced the verb as a plateau, separating it from both the subject and the object. Second, the speaker further separated the object constituent into two prosodic phrases, separating the last prepositional phrase (e.g., (La boliviana de Badalona)(mirava la melmelada meravellosa)( de la Maria)). That is, when unbalanced (S)(VO) groupings appear, other prosodic compensation strategies emerge such as further regrouping of the [VO] constituent.9 A contrast is found between the behavior of short branching S (La nena mora) and long non-branching S (La boliviana), which contain the same number of syllables: the latter cases have a higher tendency to have (SV)(O) renderings (around a 10% increase). This effect shows that the "phonological weight" of the phrase is computed not only by looking at number of syllables but also at the number of stresses and/or prosodic words.10 However, see note 3 for a more precise syntactic analysis.

Clausal parentheticals, intonational phrasing, and prosodic theory
This paper investigates the intonational phrasing of three types of parenthetical insertions – non-restrictive relative clauses (NRRCs), full sentences, and comment clauses (CCs) – in actual spoken language. It draws on a large set of data from a corpus of spoken British English. Its aim is twofold: first, it evaluates the correctness of previous claims about the intonational phrasing of parent...
متن کاملThe Role of Pitch Range Reset in Korean Sentence Processing
This study investigates the effect of pitch range reset in Korean listeners’ processing of syntactically ambiguous participle structures. Unlike Japanese and English,in Korean, the downtrend or the reset of pitch range does not consistently differentiate Accentual Phrases (AP), a lower level of phrasing, from Intonational Phrases (IP), a higher level of phrasing. Therefore, we explore Korean li...

متن کاملOn the relation between intonational phrasing and pitch accent distribution. evidence from European Portuguese varieties
Intonational phrasing and pitch accent distribution (PAD) have been proposed to be interdependent (Portuguese) and independent properties of prosodic systems (Egyptian). This paper examines the relation between intonational phrasing and pitch accent distribution in two center-southern varieties of European Portuguese Alentejo (Ale) and Algarve (Alg). Sentences obtained in a reading task systema...
متن کاملA prosodic phrasing model for a Korean text-to-speech synthesis system
This paper presents a prosodic phrasing model for Korean to be used in a textto-speech synthesis (TTS) system. Read text corpora were morpho-syntactically parsed and prosodically labeled following the Penn Korean Treebank [Han et al., 2002] and K-ToBI prosodic labeling conventions [Sun-Ah, 2000] respectively. Decision trees were trained with morpho-syntactic and textual distance features to pre...
متن کاملAn Experimental Discourse-Neutral Prosodic Phrasing System for Mandarin Chinese
Normal human speech has a clear intonational and rhythmic character. This is true of many Pacific Rim languages and plays a particularly crucial role in the many tone languages of the region, such as Thai and Chinese. However, most computer speech systems fail to utilize prosody for disambiguation or increased naturalness. In this paper, we examine the contrasts in prosodic behavior across lang...
